Educational Programs

You may not think about visiting a park to listen to a lecture but you should. Plan enough time to learn about the park and listen to the vast knowledge or park rangers who live and work in these areas. Most US Parks offer educational programs within the park that teach about the science or history associated with the park. The programs might include any of the following types of activities: talks and programs, interpretive sites, outdoor skills training, orienteering, identification and gathering skills. Learning more about the surroundings of the park will make the trip much more meaningful, enjoyable and memorable. There are often so many things to do that taking some time to investigate the possibilities can help to make the most of the time you have. These programs are usually delivered by park rangers, naturalists or guides who are knowledgable in their areas of expertise. Sometimes reservations are necessary so remember to check the schedules at the park office for educational programs. Educational Program Tips and Ideas: - Take a small notebook and pen - or a set of them for everyone
- Ask if the speaker is okay with photography before taking pictures during a presentation. If not, ask if they would pose or help you obtain some photos afterwards.
- Be sure and wait for the appropriate time to ask questions. Allow others to ask their questions also - don't hog the expert's time.
- When you learn something from an exibit or presentation, make it point to apply your new knowledge in the park - look for that bird or type of tree. Talk with those taking the trip with you about the topic and compare notes.
- Take some time prior to your park visit to think about what you would like to learn and then seek out an educational program or exhibit that will provide the answers.
- Many parks have book stores, you might find a book related to the educational program. In fact, it may be difficult to find that book anywhere else.
