The great thing about hiking is that you can choose the difficulty of the hike and the time you wish to spend outdoors. Hiking promotes health, family togetherness and outdoor awareness. To get the most out of your hiking experience at a park try to get in good shape before the trip. Make sure you take some basic supplies and equipment and investigate the terrain you will be covering on the trail. Backpacking or camping overnight while hiking is also an immensely popular activity on public lands. Hiking with a backpack full of overnight gear requires more preparation and physical endurance but it allows you to camp in more solitary areas and see sights that others cannot reach by simply taking an auto tour. Hiking Tips and Ideas: - Have comfortable boots or shoes and break them in before your trip.
- Plan to take trail snacks (protein and carbs are essential) and water - you might consider a water purifier for the trail.
- Let someone know where you are and when you plan to return. Have a plan for making contact with your friend or the park ranger when you return.
- Consider the weather and the altitude of where you will be hiking. Your climate might change during the hike so dress appropriately in a way that allows you to carry extra clothing when you don't need it.
- Make sure you know the rules about taking a pet along. If pets are allowed make sure you don't take a trail that your pet is not ready for.
- There are many things you should consider taking and many things you should not take. Make a list and think through your items - don't forget the sunscreen.
- If you have a cell phone - put an emergency number in your contacts. Name the contact ICE - in case of emergency.
- Make sure that you aware of everyone's potential medical needs and that they are aware of yours.
