Lodging

You may not know that many larger US parks offer lodging. The accomodations are wide ranging from simple cabins to 5 star hotels. The price ranges also vary of course! But you might just be surprised at how affordable a family cabin can be and how enjoyable your trip will be with your own kitchen and wood fire to sit by at night. Staying in a cabin usually means that you will need to bring almost everything you might need. Things like sheets, soap and towels are generally not provided as they would be in a hotel so call ahead and plan ahead. As for firewood, the park typically provides a small amount or you can purchase it somewhere in the park. These things vary by park but typically a cabin stay means you will not have the extras of other accomodations but it is often an inexpensive way to stay close by or within the park itself.

Most places require a reservation so call ahead and someone will help you.

Cabin Tips and Ideas:

  • If you are going to light a fire, make sure the flue is open. Know where the fire extinguisher is and make sure it is charged.
  • When you first arrive check over the cabin, try the hot water, check the heating and cooling system and look over the safety precautions. You will be glad that you looked over everything first before getting settled in. You may also have difficulty reaching someone at the office if it is after hours.
  • Get organized when you arrive. Load the cabinets, put away your clothes and supplies before you relax for the evening.
  • Not every cabin area is covered by cell phone companies so consider taking a phone card.
  • On your way in, take note of the closest store and their hours.
  • On your supplie list, remember to add the following for your cabin stay: coffee, soap and shampoo, a flashlight and bug spray.
  • Take along a few dvds with a player, games and other activities for a rainy day.
