Water Sports

US public lakes, rivers and seashores offer many great opportunities for having fun in the water. A wide range of water sport activities are allowed including waterskiing, surfing, scuba diving, visiting a beach, swimming in an outdoor pool, swimming in lakes and rivers. All kinds of benefits can be derived from water sports and activities. Good mental health is promoted by being outdoors, learning skills for self-confidence and just plain having fun. Imagine swimming during a hot day in a natural spring where jets of cold water come up from below. Imagine the adventure of paddling down a rushing river with your friends. Many of these recreation areas offer onsite vendors to rent all kinds of equipment for enjoying the water. Remember to observe all of the rules for safety and protecting the environment.

Water Sports Tips and Ideas:

  • Never be in the water alone. Someone who can swim should be there to rescue you.
  • Be aware of currents in oceans, rivers and spring fed swimming areas. Sometimes the areas that appear the safest can be the most dangerous.
  • Be familiar with how to spot dangerous wildlife around and in water. Know their habitats and stay clear.
  • Be careful swimming in cold water. Your body will grow tired much faster. Know your limits.
  • Learn first aid. Drowning is a leading cause of accidental death in the United States.
  • Watch for underwater hazards. Talk with a ranger and find out about recent storms, water levels and anything else that might hide trees or other obstacles.
  • Remember to keep plenty of water-proof sunblock on your skin. Use sunglasses and watch for the symptoms of heat stroke.
